I understand, that it can be done by using Moving Average or a Running Average or sigma value, but don't really understand what it exactly means. Moving average is the ratio of number of observations used to calculate the average. Running average is an average over a specific time frame. Sigma value is the standard deviation. What exactly do these three numbers mean? A: GPS signals (and pretty much any other signal) do not necessarily have a constant level, and the Doppler effect makes signals become frequency shifted, so the value at any moment is not a constant. If the signal doesn't change too much from one observation to the next, then you could average the signal, and that would give you a good indication of the current value. But if you want to know how the signal changes over time, then you need to calculate the average over a longer period of time, to smooth out the fluctuations. Moving averages are the standard way to do this, but what is important is the length of the period (moving average, MA, is sometimes abbreviated to MA), so MA(50) would be calculated from a set of observations over the past 50 seconds, and MA(200) would be calculated from a set of observations over the past 200 seconds. Running averages are also useful for measuring the level of variation of a signal, and can be done with any period. Running average is usually abbreviated as RA, and can be calculated for any period. For a 10 second period, RA(10) is calculated as follows: Take a sample of observations. Calculate the average over the past 10 seconds. The length of the period, and the value of the averaging parameter, are quite important for the value of the average. If you are averaging over a long period, then you will very easily see small fluctuations in the average.
